Back in the mid 60s my uncle Bill would take my family and his family on weekend camping trips. All of his equipment was military surplus, so we slept on canvas cots and inside large 4-5 man canvas wall tents. I remember, vividly, two instructions that he emphasized to us about canvas tent use. One was to never stretch the fabric more than necessary during setup because the seams' stitch holes would be stretched out to form small leaking holes. The other rule was to never touch the inside of the fabric, especially if it was raining, because a dripping leak would start at that point. These were things he learned as a Marine in the South Pacific in WWII and he made sure that we followed the rules on every camping trip. Don't know if they were true or not because when Uncle Bill said "Don"t Do" you just didn't. It was a different and better time then.
Those are great tips! Good idea. Thanks for watching
The oldtimers I know that used canvas tents would treat their tents with Thompson water seal, and had the same rules, don’t touch it, and not over tight.
@@Vikingwerk Thompson on a tent! Now that’s some waterproofing. Thanks for watching
this is very useful information thank you for sharing your story.
You should do tutorials on how to waterproof tents with silicon spray and such. Season is just next the corner and people would want to know. Be sure to title it basic like “how to waterproof your tent”
so you get the views.
Awesome upload as usual Mr.Spackmann
I’ve made a video on how to seal seams and I forgot to add it to the description of this video, so thank you, it’s been added. Thanks for watching
I've had my CanvasCamp 5M Sibley bell tent since 2014 in every kind of weather and NOT A DROP, ever!! That's up in Canada too winter camping in -38 C as well - you get what you pay for kids!!
Nice! Thanks for watching
Thank you for the reassurance, I'm glad to learn it's supposed to leak the first time, as the material acclimates to its strength.
My first use of this tent (4m) was in moderate rain; I've seen a few videos referring to "seasoning" the tent before use, but I wasn't clear on whether it would resist water immediately.
As advised, I'll double plug the a-frame and monitor the vents. I'll also research whether waterproofing spray, seam tape, or beeswax would be best, if needed.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching
it's water repellant immediately, better after giving it a soak with the hose a couple of times and letting it dry in between. I sprayed it with canvas waterproofing after it dried the 2d time... water just rolls off it now. its been up about 3 weeks on rural property. its been very cold with rain/sleet last few days and im cozy long as i keep the wood stove fed. still no leaks. its ok for 1 person. I''ll set up the 5m when i move here for good. this one is a bit small for full time habitation like a home.
Happy Sunday! I have a feeling it’s going to be worth the money. Tell your camera man to Chata. Chata fudge up. Words changed to protect the innocent ears of your viewers.
Another classic right off the bat. Cheers Chris.
Happy Sunday bro! I tell him all the time but he ain’t listening lol. Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for watching
i have one of those. i seasoned it and sprayed it with repellant. then it rained for 2 days... no leaks but had to wait 2 more to let it dry out again. i got it from the big orange box store and it was quite a bit cheaper than on amazon. it works fine and it's a great camp home for 1 at my mountain property. heavy is not a problem for my place but I wouldnt want to carry it if i was hiking
Nice! Thanks for watching
Have to say love the camera guy 😂. Lived in a 6m vevor for almost 2 years. Never had a leak !!
Did the 6m have the pole grommet too for the door? I was shocked to see the vents leak cause the only reference I have is your tent. I filmed the video once(the first time) and gave it the benefit of the doubt that it needed the pre soak. But it’s still a sweet deal for the price. Thanks for watching bro
@@AdventureswithSpackmann yes, mine had the little pole grommet too. Didn't ever have any leak problems,in a new tent now but gave that one to a friend who still uses it to shoot IG videos in.
@@erikcarey215 I’m wondering if my problem with the grommet was just from not having the cover on the outside the first time.
The Spackmera man keeps you honest. Better to record over an old Disney flick than vintage porn. With Pinochonio you are dealing with fantasy. You are also doing so with vintage porn but at least you see the bush. Makes more sense when discussing tents. Thanks for the video.
The day he does it to the P I’ll be hiring a new camera man lol. Thanks for watching
Funny. Especially with slow twin and state of the art camera. Keepem coming.👍🇨🇦
Thank you very much. I’m pretty sure it’s the newest model shooting in .5k just a pain transferring to the floppy disk to edit and upload. Thanks for watching
@@AdventureswithSpackmann Do you edit on the PET computer? Or have you upgraded to the COMMODORE 64?👍🇨🇦
@@unclebmcc6848 Commodore 64 all day! This ain’t no cheap production lol
I’m not sure what your paying the cameraman but I’m sure it’s to much. Baaahaaaha. One commenter had a great idea. Show some ways to waterproof a tent. Have a good one. Can’t wait for the next video.
Sorry I just saw the waterproofing comment
I think I may make an updated video eventually for seam sealing. It’s a common problem. Thanks for watching
You and your cameraman really crack me up bro! 😂 You two have such an awesome dynamic... it's almost like you're brothers or something 😉 haha! Would absolutely love to see a cameo from your "director"... hint hint 😉
Seriously... another wicked awesome video dude! 👍
lol I do have a robot camera gimbal thingy I think I could use for a cameo bit. I’ll see if I can put something together in the future. I do like the sounds of that. So glad you are enjoying them bro. Thank you for watching
@@AdventureswithSpackmann For sure bro! Absolutely lovin' them man! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with 👍
DUDE!!!! What's with the dirty floor? Presentation is everything! 😂
Muddy feet make for muddy floors lol. 🤷♂️ thanks for watching
Excellent Test.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching
Love the upgraded camera. VHS Woo Hoo!!!!
VHS is where it’s at! Thanks for watching
@@AdventureswithSpackmann True dat, Homey! That 8MM gear was so yesterday!
@@mrhalfstep lol heck yeah it was
When you panned up, I was expecting to see the cameraman siting there pointing out a leak for you... I agree with others that testing a waterproof spray would be a great idea, and maybe even a comparison of different brands?... It makes it so much easier filming having a cameraman though for sure 👍👍 ...Not to take anything away from you, but I really like your cameraman 😆🤣😅😉
Another good one.
What the heck, everyone is talking about the camera!!!! lol. I guess he needs his light too. I have a 5m from another brand, maybe I’ll compare them. Thanks for watching
@@AdventureswithSpackmann 👍
Good job to the cameraman keeping you honest. It's clear even small content creators let the fortune and fame get to their head. He's a great addition to the channel though and should get a raise.
I think he needs a pay cut! Groceries ain’t cheap and I gotsta eat too. Thanks for watching
I love the camera man’s humor. ; )
I’m so glad you do! I’ll let him know. Thanks for watching
I grew up using a canvas tent for family camping trips. If it was raining you didn't want to breath on the sides let alone touch them. Personally, I think that's great for a canvas tent.
So do I. It’s just the top seams and I believe it’s an easy fix. It’s not all of the top ones either so I think it’s a quality control issue. Thanks for watching
@@AdventureswithSpackmann Since it's a canvas tent, go old school and apply some beeswax or paraffin wax to those seams. ;-)
@@Doc_Watson great idea
Surely there is a mixture to spray and make it more water proof periodically?
There Absolutely is. Thanks for watching
I would like to know if it would be the same after a good waterproof enduction
What do you mean by waterproof enduction? Getting it wet to swell? Thanks for watching
@@AdventureswithSpackmann The use of a good product to avoid rain to cross the fabric
@@Alex-ck8up ah gotcha. I believe a good seam sealer would fix the problem
I bought the 5m version and it didnt leak when i was spraying it with a water hose. I hope it doesnt start leaking because im planning on living in it for at least the rest of this year
I hope it doesn’t either. Let me know if you have the same problem. Thanks for watching
Thank you for the demo, very helpful. Have been looking at a 4m version of this in the UK. They don't sell covers for these tents, I don't know if another brand would fit, as they are all slightly different shapes. Any advice, anyone? :)
I would seal the seams and not worry about a cover. If using it in snow it would be fine right out of the box. I’m currently using it and had 3 separate 1-2inch snowstorms and not a drop came in. I’m also currently giving this tent away in a giveaway with a stove!!!. Thanks for watching
@@AdventureswithSpackmann thank you for your very prompt and helpful reply! Guess the giveaway is for the US only 😁? So it is just the seams- it seems that need to be sealed, excellent! :)
@demelza32 you are welcome. And sorry yes US only.
Another great video! So I have a question maybe you could answer or even show people. BUT how do you seam....seem.....not sure how its spelled but how do you seam tape it?
I do have a video up on how I seam seal a tent. I use a silicone and brush it onto the seams. I’ve never used seam tape. Glad you liked it bro, thanks for watching
Will this tent sleep two in the winter with a stove inside, Or should I consider the size up?
It will sleep two tightly. If you plan on sitting in it with chairs, you will have to pick up at least one bed to do so during the day. Or go a size up.i have a video up with a 4m which will sleep 3 with a stove. Thanks for watching
I think I remember seeing that camcorder at Radioshack in like '96?
lol I think it’s older than that. Still puts out a good video. Thanks for watching
that cameraman you are using is a chatty cathy
I’m currently looking for a new camera man if you know of any. Thanks for watching
man, how do you transfer from that RCA tape to digital so seamlessly...??
Freaking ALIENS bro! Duh lmao. Totally kidding…. On the duh part. Most people don’t know. Thanks for watching
I just started watching but yes it will Leak
lol I don’t think you’re wrong. Thanks for watching
Wasn’t as bad as I thought
@@JasonW479 yeah honestly not too bad right now
I like what you did there..
Thank you!
Cool
Thanks bro!
@@AdventureswithSpackmann you're welcome
Not Pinocchio!!! 😂😂😂 300 for a canvas hot tent isn't bad, especially if that's all you need to do. But yea, holes through the roof will always leak eventually, remember that one from my first tent back in the 80s/90s, old A frame with holes in the roof for both poles
Yeah that design is puzzling to say the least. Idk. Maybe the cap stopped it. Thanks for watching bro
@@AdventureswithSpackmann highly likely putting the cap on top outside helped, but being on a seam, water will run down under that cap eventually and then in. That's just simple physics... But still looks like a great tent
My thought: If it's raining, it's not cold enough to NEED a hot tent. If it's cold enough to need a hot tent, it won't be raining.
If it’s snowing and your hot tent is going, then water is water whether or not it comes down from the heavens as white stuff or not. Thanks for watching
When is enough hot tent videos? I maxed out about 3 months ago. Great channel, but less hot tent.
Yeah sorry. Nice weather is coming, I get it. Thanks for watching
Forgot to put a towel down. How do you get rid of excess moisture from a canvas cot? LOL!!
Just blow it dry lol. Thanks for watching

100% Silicone caulk tubes and mineral spirits. That's the ticket
That would work! Thanks for watching
May have to look for another cameraman. That one is kind of mouthy . Probably overpaid as well 😁 A little tlc and it would probably make a solid tent . Have a great evening
I’ve posted his position on job sites already. But good help is hard to find after Covid lmao. Thanks for watching
Only camp when it's not raining, that way it doesn't leak. 🤔😂
